Established in 2001 to promote the development of new materials, processes and techniques in glass. Working in conjunction with the North West Arts Board, the Glass National Training Organisation, Colleges and Universities as well as glass practitioners from hobbyist to internationally renowned artists and manufacturers helps to ensure that we constantly explore glass as a medium- ‘art glass for everyone’.



Course Detail for 2012
An Introduction to Leadlights – 1 day suitable for beginners and improvers
This course introduces the traditional craft of stained glass making, giving you the confidence to restore your own damaged windows at home whilst creating a stained glass panel or “light catcher” from scratch.
No previous experience is required as you will cover glass cutting, making patterns, stretching and shaping lead came, soldering techniques, cementing & polishing during the day. You will also be advised on the tools and equipment required to set up your own studio.
The course is run by Ian Hartless who has over 25 years experience in traditional stained glass. He is currently involved with the restoration of the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool as well as running his own stained glass business and teaching in a local college. It is held at our fully equipped studio at 32 Wellington Park, Dunes Way, Liverpool L5 9RJ.
Each course has a maximum of 5 people giving plenty of opportunity to ask questions whilst looking to other delegates for inspiration & ideas.
You will only need to bring a sturdy pair of shoes, as all materials, glass, tools and safety equipment are provided. We also supply refreshments on site and lunch is included at a nearby café.
Introductory Fusing – 1 day suitable for beginners and improvers
Whether you have little or no experience in glass, this is guaranteed to get you “fired up” with finished pieces to take home once cooled.
Discover glass cutting, compatibility, accessories (frit, stringers and confetti) and slumping; learn how glass behaves when heated and cooled, and why some glasses are not compatible with others. Using both clear and coloured glass, you will create either, a fused panel, a bowl or set of coasters.
We can also advise on equipment & materials required to set up your own studio.
This course is run by Kat Walton, who spends most of her time working at a restoration workshop. Her projects are both traditional and contemporary, from fusing to painting and lead work.

Intermediate Fusing – 1 day suitable for improvers and advanced*
This technique-based, two day course follows on from the introductory level, looking at more complex materials and processes of hot glass working. A must for anyone who wants to make a living from fused glass.
The first day covers mould making and multi layering to create three-dimensional shapes and slabs in glass. Work with enamels, gold and platinum lustres, and copper oxide to create colours, metallic effects and bubbles. You will receive in-depth tuition on the firing cycles for fusing and slumping different types of glass.
The second day covers texture and relief in glass using ceraboard, plaster and fibre blanket.
Also included is an overview of casting using frits, inclusions and the Patte de Verre technique.
This course is run by the enthusiastic Jenny Barker, who, not only teaches at Wrexham University, but also runs a successful glass design company.
It is held at our fully equipped studio at 32 Wellington Park, Dunes Way, Liverpool L5 9RJ.
This course has a maximum of only 4 delegates, giving plenty of opportunity to ask questions whilst looking to other delegates for inspiration & ideas.
You will only need to bring a sturdy pair of shoes, as all materials, glass, tools and safety equipment are provided. We also supply refreshments on site and lunch is included at a nearby café.
*Students must have completed the basic fusing course before signing up for this course, or have prior glass cutting and fusing experience. Unfortunately the packed schedule does not allow for a recap of the basics.
Intermediate Leadlights – 1 day suitable for improvers
This technique-based course is intended for those who wish to take their lead light skills to the next level. Bring your own design, or choose from our wide range.
On this course you will create more adventurous and complicated designs, learn about different joints and multiple panels. You can direct the lesson towards restoration or more contemporary designs. Please contact us if there is a particular area you wish to cover.

Copper Foil – 1 day Suitable for beginners and improvers
Design and create a 3-dimensional, bevelled light catcher using copper foil.
No previous experience is required as we cover glass cutting to a pattern, copper foiling
and tinning techniques. Part of the course will be spent looking at how to apply the copper foil to the glass and the soldering of the pieces together smoothly. We can also advise on the essential equipment required to set up your own studio.

Jewellery Making – 1 day Suitable for beginners and improvers
Design and create your own unique pieces of jewellery, which can be taken home after firing.
No previous experience is required as we cover glass cutting, the basics of fusing, design, shape and colour. Using both our standard and microwave kilns, you will soon master the techniques needed to make beautiful bracelets, necklaces, earrings and cufflinks. We can also advise on what is needed to set up your own studio if required.

Mosaics – 1 day Suitable for beginners and improvers
This course is intended for those who wish to create their own glass mosaic to take home. We cover everything from design and layout to preparation of materials and construction.
No previous experience is required as this course leads you from glass cutting to mounting your mosaic. It takes you from making a cartoon template, using moulds and adhesive backing of the mosaic to grouting. Also covered is the mixing of the setting compound and instruction on the required materials and equipment.
You will only need to bring a sturdy pair of shoes, and possibly a couple of design ideas (although we do have many books for inspiration) as all materials, glass, tools and safety equipment are provided. We also supply refreshments on site and lunch is included at a nearby café.

Painting On Glass – 1 day Suitable for beginners and improvers
This course is designed for those interested in the traditional art of painting on glass. Paint, shade and fire your work in our brand new gas kiln before taking it home.
Although only a 1- day course, the topics included are: cutting glass, preparing samples using stains, enamels and tracing, along with mixing different compounds to use in the painting process. Also included is information about firing curves, shading and the Albinus Elskus techniques.

Bead Making – half day Suitable for beginners and improvers
No experience is necessary to learn the modern art of glass bead making, simply lots of practice.
On this half-day course, you will be taught “flame working,” how to manipulate glass rods to create round, cylindrical and square shaped beads. You will decorate your beads, add inclusions and pull multi-coloured stringers. Once cooled, you will be shown how to mount your beads on key rings, chains and bracelets. We can also advise on what is needed to set up your own studio.

Microwave Kiln Fusing – half day Suitable for beginners and improvers
Discover the fascinating technique of ‘instant’ fusing in a standard, domestic microwave. You will make several small items including jewellery pieces and small tiles, which are fused, annealed and cooled before your eyes.
The past, present and future of microwave fusing is discussed, as well as glass cutting, various fusing materials and how they work together. The course also covers technical explanations, how glass behaves when heated and cooled, and why some glasses are not compatible with others
